- 'Their chances of success against us are 742 to 1.'
'You had better be right!'
'I am a droid. I am always right.' - ―TX-20 and Wat Tambor on Ryloth — Listen(file info)[src]
The T-series tactical droid, formerly known as the CDE-T unit[3], was a model of advisordroid serving the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. The super tactical droid was later created as an upgraded tactical droid model.
CharacteristicsEdit
- 'That droid exaggerates.'
- ―Wat Tambor, to Dooku, about TA-175[src]
This model was more intelligent than standard battle droids and was deployed to command Separatist troops where organic leadership was not available. They had advanced combat-analysis software and were very intelligent.[1] They were also designed with advanced cognitive modules that processed vast quantities of data rapidly, and would constantly run simulations of imminent combat, calculating odds to develop strategies.[3]
Their bodies were approximately the same size as a B2 super battle droid, but were boxier in appearance than their combat-designed compatriots. In addition, their voices also lacked any type of inflection, and instead spoke in a flat, droning monotone. Tactical droids were observed to be impatient, arrogant, pushy, and demanding.[3] They believed themselves superior to other droids, as evidenced by their poor treatment and insults to battle droids, such as during the battles of Quell and Ryloth. They often issued conflicting orders due to their sense of superiority.[1] When pushed, tactical droids would even order the destruction of their own allies if they got in the way, as seen at the Sky Battle of Quell.[4] Some of these droids were also in charge of entire fleets and land forces. Most Separatist leaders allowed tactical droids greater autonomy over their forces.[3]
Tactical droids were not as homogeneous as other battle droid models. The personalities and voices between units had slight variation, making no two units identical. Tactical droids also bore colorful paint schemes, each of which was unique as well.
HistoryEdit
- 'The general's description of your tactics have been one hundred percent accurate today. Very impressive, even by my standards.'
- ―TV-94, on General Grievous' description of Anakin Skywalker[src]
At least three tactical droids were used in the staging of the Battle of Christophsis. AdmiralTrench used a tactical droid named TI-99 aboard his command ship.[5] One such droid, TJ-55, had its head stolen to discover how the CIS knew the Republic's strategies, and a clone traitor was later revealed. Asajj Ventress later dispatched another tactical droid to give orders to GeneralWhorm Loathsom while she left to continue her master's plan.[6]
Another such droid named TX-20 was stationed on CountDooku's command ship during the events of the Battle of Ryloth where he sent a message to Lott Dod to go to Toydaria.[7]
Later during the war, CommanderBly and GeneralAayla Secura encountered a tactical droid on one of their missions. They planned on using the droid's severed head to search for Separatist secrets.[8] Sometime later, during the Sky Battle of Quell, another tactical droid named TF-1726 was used to dispatch orders onboard a Munificent-class star frigate.[4]
On Naboo, a tactical droid was used to carry out orders while Dr.Nuvo Vindi was planning to release the Blue Shadow Virus back into the galaxy. The droid used a Flitknot speeder to do scope out the area with three STAP-mounted B1 battle droids. His speeder was destroyed, and the droids' remains were taken back to Theed so they could be scanned. This eventually led to the discovery of Vindi's laboratory.[9]
TX-20 would also lead droids during the Battle of Ryloth, under the watchful eye of Wat Tambor, and was in charge of the proton cannons there.[10] TX-20 furthermore took the Twi'leks of Nabat hostage and used them as a 'living shield' for the cannons. TX-20 also employed gutkurrs to attack the Republic forces. However, after GeneralObi-Wan Kenobi freed the Twi'lek prisoners, the former hostages destroyed the unit.
Another such droid, TA-175, also served to command the operations of the Separatist fortress at the capital city of Lessu on Ryloth. This unit was very strict in obeying orders and maintaining schedules, to the point where he ordered the departure of the evacuation shuttle from the planet, abandoning Wat Tambor, who selfishly refused to leave until the delayed MTTs carrying the last of the spoils arrived. The droid disobeyed Tambor's commands in doing so, rigidly acknowledging CountDooku's superiority in the situation.[11]
During the Battle of Juma 9, a Tactical droid relayed orders to Battle droids on the station. He was cut down by Luminara Unduli and Plo Koon. Later, two more droids were used during a battle on Mustafar.
A heavily modified tactical droid served MagistratePassel Argente. The droid later participated and was destroyed during the battle of Ukio.
TX-21 served ArchdukePoggle the Lesser on Geonosis at the time of the Second Battle of Geonosis. It encountered Jedi CommandersBarriss Offee and Ahsoka Tano in the control center of a new droid foundry. Tano threw an explosive device at the droid and it attached itself to the super tank TX-21 was standing beside. The tactical droid laughed, stating that the super tank could not be damaged by such a device. He was correct; though there was no damage to the tank, TX-21 was destroyed by the explosion.[12]
A tactical droid was also used by the CIS during their occupation of Tirahnn, to work in the command center of a planetary ion cannon that was located in the world's capital city.[1] Another tactical droid, TV-94, served as the personal assistant to GeneralGrievous after his successful Capture of Eeth Koth. This droid was later informed by Grievous that the approaching Republic forces led by Jedi would be a two-pronged attack; one aimed at distracting him and the other aimed at rescuing Eeth Koth. The cyborg General's predictions came true when Anakin Skywalker along with Adi Gallia arrived covertly on Grievous' Separatist destroyer. The tactical droid than sprang an ambush led which consisted of BX-series droid commandos and admitted that Grievous's predictions had surprised it. This tactical droid also attempted to dissuade the Jedi from attacking by inducing electrical shocks in Eeth Koth and later claimed that the next tap of the button would kill the Jedi Council member. However, Skywalker used The Force to bring the tactical droid to him and severed its arm preventing it from activating the button. As the battle raged, the tactical droid managed to reclaim its arm and chuckled at its success but lacked a limb to press the button to which the Jedi terminated the droid's existence.
Droid TV-94B was stationed on Grievous' Command ship during his assault on Kamino.[13]
Another droid commanded the CIS forces during the Battle of Malastare, where he was destroyed by the Republic's Electro-proton bomb.[14]
Another droid executed ChevinMajorHoom Garaf during the Third Battle of Aefao. However it's action started a chaotic firefight in Separatist rear guard, which later ensured a Republic victory.[3]
A tactical droid won a victory at the First Battle of Plagen. Before the battle, the droid had assassinated Kerkoiden General Piar Nagelsa and discarded his battle plan.[3]
By around 20 BBY,[15] the Confederacy, considering standard tactical droids to be easily outmaneuvered by the Republic, manufactured the super tactical droid to compensate for the tactical droid's weaknesses. Kalani was one of the droids in the new super tactical droid line.[16]
Behind the scenesEdit
Tactical droids were introduced in the animated TV series as characters to create competent enemy commanders that were simultaneously disposable. In part, this was meant to create a degree of variety in the TV series so that the same enemies would not be defeated continuously.[17]
The word 'Tactical' is written along the side of the head of at least one tactical droid in Aurebesh.[18]
Because the crew of Star Wars: The Clone Wars wanted different villains that were expendable, Tactical droids are given different paint schemes and voices. Among those who have voiced Tactical droids are, James Arnold Taylor, Matthew Wood, Ashley Eckstein, Phil LaMarr, Corey Burton, Gary Scheppke and Matt Lanter.

- 'Is that… the head of an old tactical droid?'
'These droids were great at finding things, calculating. Found my master and I a few times when we didn't want to be found.' - ―Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka Tano[src]
T-series tactical droids were a model of tactical droid manufactured by Baktoid Combat Automata for use during the Clone Wars. They were utilized by the Confederacy of Independent Systems to coordinate their military, acting as advisors and often generals for their superior officers.[1] The droids were deployed across the galaxy in many key battles of the war such as those at Christophsis,[5]Ryloth[6] and the Second Battle of Geonosis.[7]
Ruthlessly intelligent, the T-series mostly steered clear of the war's front lines and instead commanded their troops from various Separatist headquarters.[1] They exhibited independence larger than that of their B1 battle droid comrades, and although they were loyal to the Separatist cause, they were not afraid to abandon their superiors to guarantee their own survival.[6]
Later on in the Clone Wars, the more advanced super tactical droid was introduced[8] but its predecessor still saw continued use up until at least 19 BBY.[9] Despite the galaxy-wide deactivation of the droid army at the end of the war,[10] the remnants of the T-series could still be found well into the Imperial Era. During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, former JediPadawanAhsoka Tano provided the crew of the Ghost with the head of a T-series tactical droid, to aid them in their search for Clone CaptainRex on Seelos.[11]
DescriptionEdit
- 'I calculate the remaining clones are attempting a desperate final offensive. Their chances of success against us are 742 to 1.'
'You had better be right.'
'I am a droid. I am always right.' - ―TX-20 and EmirWat Tambor, during the Battle of Ryloth[src]
T-series tactical droids were humanoidfourth classtactical droids standing at a height of 1.93 meters tall.[3] Compared to the standard B1 battle droids who served under them, they were boxier in appearance and often sported varying color schemes.[12]
The droids were designed to avoid the front lines and calculate battle strategies from the safety of flagships or other fortified locations. Highly intelligent, they were often given full authority over Separatistmilitary elements by their commanding officers. However, due to their positions, they were prone to expressing their superiority over all other droid models.[1] They were even known to sacrifice a large number of their own troops if they got in the way[13] and leave behind their superior officers to survive.[6] Additionally, their reliance on precise calculations meant they lacked imagination when dealing with unexpected situations, and soon enough the Galactic Republic began to exploit this in the Clone Wars.[8] Although they were rarely seen engaged in combat, some T-series were observed wielding E-5 blaster rifles.[4]
HistoryEdit
Clone WarsEdit
- 'This is taking too long. Destroy that cruiser.'
'But sir, there are still hundreds of droids on board.'
'I don't care!'
'Roger, roger.' - ―TF-1726 and a B1 battle droid, during the Battle of Quell[src]
T-series tactical droids were manufactured by Baktoid Combat Automata, the company that also developed the B1 battle droid among a host of other droids specialized in warfare, and the T-series served in a important advisory role among the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars[1] against the Galactic Republic.[13] The droids were utilized in many early battles of the war including the Battle of Christophsis[5] and the Battle of Quell,[13] acting as both naval and ground commanders. At least three T-series tactical droids were used by the Separatists during the Battle of Christophsis.[5][4]
The droid TX-20 demonstrated ruthless tactics in the Separatist defense of the city of Nabat, during the Battle of Ryloth. Using the city's population as living shields against the Republic's clone troopers, he forced the Republic forces to enter the city without explosive devices. He then sent out multiple viper recon droids to ascertain the identity of the Republic's general in command of the assault. Upon discovering that it was Jedi MasterObi-Wan Kenobi, he calculated that the Jedi would be hesitant to attack as he would risk injuring the civilians held there. Ultimately however, TX-20's arrogance blinded him and he underestimated Kenobi and his own Twi'lekprisoners which consequently cost him his life.[6]
When the war envelopedGeonosis a second time, TX-21 aided ArchdukePoggle the Lesser in his deployment of the Separatists' new super tank. Their attempts were thwarted however, when the Republic destroyed the bridge leading to the Geonosis primary droid foundry that the tanks rode across. Additionally, two Jedi Padawans, Ahsoka Tano and Barriss Offee, infiltrated the foundry but they were confronted by TX-21 and his super tank escort. They planted a thermal detonator on the tank and as TX-21 boasted about how the detonator could not destroy the tank, he neglected to recognise that it could destroy him. The detonator killed him moments later.[7]
As the war entered its later stages, the new super tactical droid model was introduced as an improved successor to the T-series. These new droids were larger, more resistant to damage and even considered themselves superior to their organic counterparts.[8][1] Despite this, the T-series continued to see use in the war, with several being used during the battle for Anaxes. In fact, one reported directly to Separatist AdmiralTrench.[9]
Early rebellion against the Galactic EmpireEdit
- 'How in all the galaxy is that droid gonna find your friend?'
- ―Ezra Bridger to Ahsoka Tano[src]
In the final hours of the Clone Wars, the newly christened Sith LordDarth Vader sent a message to the Trade Federation on behalf of Darth Sidious, which called for the deactivation of the Separatist Droid Army.[10] Despite this, former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano obtained the head of a T-series tactical droid at some point in time. During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Tano became an integral part of the Phoenix rebel cell. She gave the T-series head to the Spectres to aid them in their search for her friend, former Clone CaptainRex, on the planet Seelos. The Spectres were able to feed the head power, at which point it scanned for a signal while simultaneously listing a set of numbers over and over again: 7567. Unbeknownst to the Spectres, the numbers were a reference to Captain Rex's former clone trooper designation and shortly thereafter, the Spectres homed in on a modified AT-TE, the source of the signal and Rex's new home.[11]

Behind the scenesEdit
T-series tactical droids first appeared in Jedi Crash, the thirteenth episode of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars'first season.[13] Production-wise, they first appeared in Innocents of Ryloth, the first season's twentieeth episode.[14] Throughout the show, the droids were voiced by various actors including: Matt Lanter,[15]James Arnold Taylor,[4]Ashley Eckstein[16] and Matthew Wood.[13]

The modulated voice pattern that they possess was partly inspired by the voice of Lucifer in the original Battlestar Galactica series.[14] The word 'tactical' was also written along the side of at least one tactical droid's head in Aurebesh.[17]
